LAPEER, Mich. (WJBK) -- A large fire in downtown Lapeer's historic business district has gutted a building that includes apartments and led to damage at the adjacent Pix Theatre.

No injuries were reported following the blaze, which started around 7 p.m. Tuesday about 45 miles northwest of Detroit.

Mayor William Sprauge says between 25-30 people living in the apartments were displaced by the fire. They were being housed in the county courthouse and receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

The cause wasn't immediately known.

Chief of Lapeer Fire and Rescue Terry Kluge says the fire started in one of the second floor apartments, located above retail space. He said the fire spread quickly, but crews from several departments were able to contain the blaze.

"We're very happy with where we're at," said Kluge in regards to saving the Pix Theatre, which is over 100 years old and recently underwent a $300,000 renovation.

Kluge says the theatre has minor smoke and water damage.
