CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A counterterrorism expert has been named the new special agent-in-charge of the FBI's Chicago Division.

Outgoing director Robert S. Mueller III appointed Robert J. Holley, an Indiana native who most recently served as deputy assistant director of the FBI's Counterterrorism Division, according to a statement from the agency.

Holley is a 1977 graduate of Peru High School in Peru, Ind., and a 1981 graduate of Ball State University, according to the FBI. He served nine years in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer.

He became a special agent with the FBI in 1995 and first reported to the Chicago Division, where he was promoted to supervisory special agent of an international terrorism squad, according to the statement.

In 2005, he was promoted and assigned to FBI Headquarters as a unit chief in the Counterterrorism Division, the statement said. He transferred back to Chicago in 2008 to serve as assistant special agent-in-charge of the National Security Branch.

In 2010, he was appointed section chief of the Counterterrorism Division, where he was responsible for all U.S.-based international terrorism investigations. He was then appointed special agent-in-charge of the Indianapolis Division in 2011.
