Livingston Co. authorities on lookout for possible drag racing

GENOA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -- Authorities in Livingston County say they're on the lookout for possible illegal drag racing after reports about two planned races.

The sheriff's department says it responded Saturday to closed portion of Nixon Road south of Beck Road in Genoa Township after getting calls about a planned race late that night. Deputies cited eight motorists in the area for accessing the closed road about 35 miles northwest of Detroit.

Shortly afterward, a 911 call reported the race had been moved to Cedar Lake Road south of Norton Road, this time in Marion Township. Deputies responded and dispersed a crowd of about 20 people. The department says those told to leave the area denied that a race was planned.

The department is warning people not to be involved in such races. And it is seeking tips from the public about any future races.

Sheriff Robert J. Bezotte says drag racing on a public roadway is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine and/or 93 days in jail.
