Travel Nightmare Raises Security Question

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT -

Brad Gertz flies back and forth between Philly and Chicago all the time, and he says what happened to him on Sunday raises some big security questions. FOX 29 is still waiting for the TSA to give some answers.

Brad Gertz's travel nightmare is shining a spotlight on a possible airport security concern.

Gertz says he arrived at Philadelphia International Airport on Sunday to check in for an American Airlines flight to Chicago taking off at 1:05 p.m. He says that a ticketing agent told him someone with his information was already on a plane to Chicago that took off hours earlier.

"I can tell you right now the color went out of my face," Gertz said." To tell me that someone else went on a flight as me, has my ticket...Brad is on the plane...completely threw me off."

Gertz says immediately he thought his identity was stolen.

He began tweeting American Airlines for answers, they said their system showed Gertz was on an earlier plane and was checked in for that new flight by 8:43 a.m. Gertz says he never changed his travel plans.

"I understand it's a mistake, but it's a costly mistake," Gertz said.

American Airlines confirms that one of their employees entered an incorrect computer key, printed Gertz's boarding pass and gave it to another passenger by mistake.

American Airlines claims that passenger then successfully made it through a TSA checkpoint before anyone realized the mistake. We called and emailed the TSA to ask how that could have happened. So far FOX 29 has not received a response.

"You would think that the person who checks the ID with a ticket would look at the name...not just the destination," Gertz said.

Even more frustrating, Gertz says that once he received a fresh new boarding pass, the computer system itself wasn't updated and he was questioned a second time.

Fortunately, he made it onto his correct flight but the false alarm and confusion has Gertz raising the issue.

"This may not be identity theft and I'm grateful... I'm grateful for that, but this is a major security issue. The fact that someone got through security as me is completely unacceptable," Gertz said.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce has called and e-mailed the TSA, and we will bring you their response, when we get one.

In the meantime, Brad Gertz says that American Airlines has offered him the choice of flier miles or a travel voucher. He says he's not interested in either.
