MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

University of Minnesota students were asked to shelter in place Monday after campus police received a report of a man who may be armed with a handgun in Anderson Hall.

"I was like, wow, I just can't believe this is happening," Jacob Arndt, a junior at the U of M, told Fox 9 News.

All people on the West Bank were urged to find a safe place to stay until police finished their search of the campus.

"We sat against the walls. They told us to get away from the windows," Erik Shay recalled. "The whole time I was like, 'This is crazy. He's just one building over.'"

ALL CLEAR AT 4 P.M.

Shortly after 4 p.m., officers announced that search was complete. All classes and activities will go on as scheduled.

No shooting occurred, and no arrests have been announced. The university says police will remain on alert in the area, but they do believe the suspect left campus.

ARMED ROBBERY ATTEMPT

According to the U of M, the situation evolved from an attempted robbery report in which a man displayed a gun to a woman in an attempt to steal her laptop.

Police said they were searching for an African American man described as age 20, 6 feet tall and last seen wearing a black, puffy hooded jacket. Anyone who sees him is urged to call 911.

University of Minnesota Police Chief Greg Hestness explained that the victim screamed when she saw the man grab her empty backpack. He then ran into the tunnels.

Much of the information regarding the alert was disseminated via Twitter, but the university also sent a text to students urging them to stay put.

SUSPECT PHOTO CORRECTED

University of Minnesota police say the person seen in the first surveillance photograph they released in connection with the incident was identified and cleared of any wrongdoing.

Police released a second photo of their new suspect on Wednesday afternoon.

CAMPUS CRIME

The incident is the latest in a series of robberies and assaults in the area over the past few weeks, but it's the first to take place on campus grounds.

In response, campus security is promoting an expansion of the Gopher Chauffeur, a service that transports students to and from various locations.
