Ex-Marine Mistaken for Mall Shooter

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Cody Donovan, an ex-Marine police officer who was honorably discharged a couple months ago was mistaken by county police for being the Garden State Plaza Mall shooter the night of the mayhem.

Donovan is currently living in New Milford as a volunteer EMT and fireman. He was with a couple of friends the night of the Garden State Plaza Mall shooting and when Donovan heard what was going on over police radio he went to the scene where he knew he could be of help.

Donovan identified himself to police officers on the scene when he first arrived and told them that he was a former Marine. Donovan’s lawyer said the police officers were fine with that and accepted his assistance. During that time, Donovan helped people come out of the mall and he also helped direct traffic in the parking lot.

Unfortunately for Donovan, he matched the description of the shooter and was wearing all black. At this time police officers had no idea where the shooter was located. They didn’t know if he was outside the mall or still inside with hundreds of scared shoppers and employees. County police officers approached Donovan, asked him a couple questions and then patted him down, which is when they found a gun that he had on him.

Donovan was charged for unlawful protection of a weapon and was arrested.  He was released the next day but could now face up to 10 years in jail for just trying to help.

Deidre Donovan, Cody’s mother, wants people to know that her son is an upstanding ex-Marine.

Donovan’s arrest has sparked a lot of outrage from various different people on social media sites including Twitter.

One tweet said “Looks like someone is going to need a solid from the Gov. (Chris Christie) to stay out of jail on this one.”

Donovan’s lawyer now has to negotiate with the prosecutor because of New Jersey’s stiff gun laws, even though Donovan was doing a good deed.
