Flurry watch: Big chill on the way Tuesday

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

You can say goodbye to the mild weather for the next few days. The FOX 5 Storm Team is tracking an arctic cold front that will bring big changes by late Tuesday-- and there's a (small) chance some spots will catch a few snow flurries.

FOX 5 Storm Team chief meteorologist Ken Cook says while Monday was sunny and mild, Tuesday will bring the front -- and with it, we'll get some very gusty winds.  By 1 p.m., Cook says winds will be 15-25 mph with higher gusts.  Temperatures will begin to tumble, ultimately putting lows Tuesday night and Wednesday morning in the mid 20s to low 30s. As a result, a freeze watch has already been issued for 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Cook said that he expects the watch to be upgraded to a warning soon.

So-- the obvious question-- will it snow? Probably not. Cook says he's been watching various computer forecast models since last week going back and forth on the idea of snow for north Georgia with this front.  This morning, there is a consensus among models that this front will likely pass through north Georgia precipitation-free.

Still, if there's enough moisture, Cook says temps would support snow flurries on Tuesday night.  So you're saying there's a chance?  Maybe-- but even if there are flurries, Cook says accumulation is not in the forecast.  He also says the lack of moisture and warm ground temperatures should prevent any travel issues, which is good news for your commute.

The FOX 5 Storm Team will continue to track the chance for any possible snow with this front, but the bigger headline appears to be a big cool down and very strong winds.
