French Family Deals With Travel Nightmare

Posted: Updated:

A French family is dealing with a travel nightmare after an airline refuses to let one of their relatives board the plane.

22-year-old Kevin Chenais has been in America for more than a year to receive treatment for a hormone disorder. He requires oxygen and regular medical attention.

He checked out of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and was hoping to return home.

"This time before leaving I knew something would be wrong," Kevin recalled.

Indeed it was. British Airways would not honor the return ticket back to France that Kevin bought when he purchased the round trip 18 months ago. The airline explains that it's not possible because Kevin weighs 500 pounds and has a medical condition.

Kevin's mother blames the airline because she says that she informed them about Kevin's size and condition before they bought their tickets.

"If they could bring him here with that problem in economy [class], there was a way to take him back by economy. But just get him back home for his medical treatments to continue," Christina Chenais pleaded.

The family plans to travel by train to New York and then board the Queen Marry Two passenger ship to England.

"I'm sure a lot of big people like me or bigger cannot travel because they have the same problem," Kevin said.

British Airways has responded to the Daily Mirror with a statement, saying, "Unfortunately it is not possible to safely accommodate the customer on any of our aircraft and the family has been offered a full refund…The British Airways team has been in regular contact with the family, providing guidance and support as well as exploring other options for travel…We have also provided hotel accommodation throughout.
