DEP Not Addressing Landfill Smell

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Roxbury Residents are still suffering from the toxic smell coming from the Fenimore Landfill and are having a hard time getting any help from the state.

Documents have been uncovered that show the toxic smell of hydrogen sulfide is actually being caused by the rotting drywall that was disposed of in the landfill which was originally approved by the DEP. However, the DEP is yet to come up with a solution to these toxic fumes and horrible smell coming from the Fenimore Landfill.

Now that Roxbury residents know what is causing the odor problem, they want action. They are pleading for the DEP to remove the toxic material that’s destroying the neighborhood, but the DEP is not responding to any calls.

Roxbury Environmental Action Coalition said “contrary to the state saying that it would have huge cost and wouldn’t solve the problem, they found a similar site in Florida where they trucked out the toxic material which took about $6 million in three months and the problem was solved. “

When Governor Christie was asked about this ongoing problem at the landfill he wasn’t too optimistic that the situation in Florida would be the same for residents here New Jersey. “Worst case scenario to remove the 400,000 cubic feet of debris, it would take 2 years,” Christie said.

Currently, the DEP has scrubbers in place at the landfill site that are running constantly trying to mask the smell. But is that all it’s doing is masking the problem, not fixing it?

Residents are extremely fearful for their health because no one has addressed the issue of whether the air in the surrounding neighborhoods is toxic or not. The DEP originally stated that it’s harmless; meanwhile residents are getting sick and say thatitt can’t be good for them.

In addition, the DEP has refused to hold meetings with the Roxbury residents to address this problem or come up with a solution.
