Man in custody after Detroit barbershop shooting leaves 3 dead, six injured

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit Police Chief James Craig says a man is in custody following a shooting at a barbershop that claimed three lives and injured six others.

Craig says the man, who was arrested Thursday morning in Rochester, is considered a person of interest and is being held at the Oakland County Sheriff's Department. Homicide detectives plan to interview the man Thursday afternoon, Craig says.

"This man is a convicted felon and was wearing body armor at the time of his arrest," said Craig.

Craig says shots erupted at Al's Barbershop on Seven Mile Road and Keystone just before 6 p.m. Wednesday. Craig said 20 to 30 people were packed in a small back room where people were "engaged in gambling activities" when the shooter opened fire through an open rear door.

"People rushed out of the building and were running into other area businesses for cover," Detroit police spokesperson Kelly Miner said Wednesday night.

Names of the victims have not been released.

Police were looking for a 2004 black Impala and a 2004 white Impala with the windows possibly broken out from bullets.

"It's tragic situation," said Craig.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Detroit police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.

We'll have much more on this story throughout the day.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
