Theft Victim Gets New Wheels

West Philadelphia -

Only on FOX 29...a heartless thief is no match for our big-hearted viewers!

Last night, we told you about 45-year-old John Allen, whose wheelchair was stolen from him as he sat, resting right next to it.

The story struck a chord with FOX 29 viewers, who rushed forward with offers of help!

The crook may still have Allen's old chair, but Allen's got a brand new set of wheels!

45 year old John Allen gets around in a loaner wheelchair these days. Several months ago, he fell and hit his head-- the nerve damage cost him the use of both legs.

"It's kind of stressing, because I ain't used to it- I like to go. I don't like to just sit around," Allen said.

That stress grew Monday night. Waiting for the trolley at 41st and Girard, Allen was sitting next to his wheelchair to give his lower back and legs a break, when a man approached.

"Guy came across the street and when he got to my wheelchair, he just grabbed my wheelchair and started running," Allen said.

The man crossing the street is part of the surprise we had cooked up when we asked John to meet us at the corner of Ridge and Girard.

Andy is president of 7th Street Medical Supply in Feasterville. He's helped us before, when we needed to replace a worn out or stolen wheelchair. And he came through again with a bigger and better chair, with all the bells and whistles.

"Yeah, this feels more comfortable now," Allen said.

A few adjustments later...and John was ready to roll.

Andy said he'd seen our original report on Fox29's Facebook page...and empathized with the victim and the crook!

Allen is currently undergoing physical therapy. He doesn't know when or if he'll regain the use of his legs, but for now, he's learned that the generosity of FOX 29 viewers is the "wheel deal."
