Hart County school closed after bat infestation

Posted: Updated:
HART COUNTY, Ga. -

An elementary school in Hart County will be closed Thursday and Friday as officials clean up a bat infestation.

School officials say this is the third time in several years that Hartwell Elementary School has run into the problem, but this time it became a health concern.

"This is the first time they've been in an area where the smell penetrated into the classroom," said Hart County Schools Superintendent Jerry Bell.

Bell emphasized that the closure has more to do with giving work crews access to the building. He said students have not been exposed to any dangers.

Some parents have chosen to keep their kids out of classes, but the Hart County Schools said the attendance absentee rate -- about 40 students out on Wednesday -- is average.

School officials say instead of using the old method of sealing of the entry point, they'll seal off the entire school in hopes that the determined bats find a new home.

Bell said that students won't have to make up the missed days, but teachers will.
