Two Studies: Americans Satisfied With Life

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

According to a Gallup Poll and a separate index by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), people in the United States generally are very happy people. This comes even during our time of recession.

When the OECD asked to rate their satisfaction with life on a scale of 1 to 10, most Americans said 7, which is higher than the organization's average of 6.6.

The U.S. ranked at the top in housing, income and wealth, but was in the bottom 20% in categories of work-life balance and social connections.

Other countries with happy people, according to the study, are Iceland, Australia, Norway, Canada, Sweden and Switzerland. Some of the countries with the most unsatisfied people are Greece, Mexico, Chile, Estonia, Hungary, Portugal, and Turkey.

The Gallup poll surveyed 2,031 adults nationwide. It asked respondents whether they were satisfied with a variety of different aspects of their lives. When compared to 1998, the number of Americans who report being satisfied by their safety from physical harm have increased by nine percentage points (to 87%), according to the Gallup poll. Satisfaction with their leisure time and education level, both went up from 64 to 69% and 74 to 78%, respectively.

However, satisfaction with future prospects for respondents and their families declined the most, from 76 to 63%. Also, satisfaction with financial net worth or savings dropped from 56 to 46% of respondents.
