Man Dies in Fall from Helicopter

Posted: Updated:

A 60-year-old man fell or jumped from a helicopter today near the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach and died at a hospital.

The fall was initially reported by a Huntington Beach police helicopter crew -- which also patrols Newport Beach -- around 1 p.m., according to Jennifer Manzella of the Newport Beach Police Department.

The police helicopter crew spotted the man in the water and directed lifeguards and a Sheriff's Department harbor patrol to the scene, Manzella said. The man was fished from the water and treated by paramedics before being taken to a hospital, where he died, she said.

It was unclear how far the man had fallen, although a witness told the Daily Pilot the helicopter appeared to be about 300 feet above the ocean.  Newport Beach police were investigating the death as a possible suicide.

It was not immediately clear how many other people were in the helicopter, although Manzella said somebody in the aircraft contacted authorities to report that a passenger had fallen from the copter.

The man's name was not immediately released, pending notification of relatives.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
