Christie Campaigns With NM Governor

Posted: Updated:
Hillside, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

Today is Election Day and Governor Christie has been hitting the campaign trail hard in order to get voters out to the polls. Yesterday Christie visited both Nutley and Hillside, New Jersey, where he was campaigning with New Mexico’s governor, Susana Martinez.

Christie has only asked two GOP members to come to New Jersey and campaign with him. Last week former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani campaigned with Christie and now Governor Martinez is getting a taste of Garden State as well. Christie said that Martinez has done similar things in her state that he’s done in New Jersey, referring to his bipartisan efforts to work with both Democrats and Republicans.

“I was really particular about who I wanted to come in and campaign with me, so today and tomorrow is going to be a great day for me because I have Susana here with me, and we’re going to campaign together,” Christie said.

Christie said that if he wins then the entire nation will be looking to New Jersey for leadership. Some people are even speculating if Christie and Martinez are planning to run together in the 2016 presidential election.

Christie is working hard to get his votes. He wants to win big, especially in Hillside, where former governor Jon Corzine won in 2008. “You’ve never known me to take anything for granted or take anything easy. We’ve worked hard this entire campaign. So I’m thrilled that I’m up in the polls,” he said.

At one of the campaign stops Christie brought up Senator Barbara Buono’s interview with MSNBC where she read sections of the book Double Down: Game Change 2012 by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann. The book talks about Mitt Romney’s run for presidency in 2012, but also talks about Romney’s potential reasons for passing on Chris Christie as his running mate.

Christie wasn’t concerned about Buono’s talk show appearance. “I’m actually campaigning and I’m glad Senator Buono has so little to do that she’s reading excerpts from books. See, this is the problem. Nobody in New Jersey cares about that book, and in the end, there is nothing in that book that the people of New Jersey don’t already know about me,” he said.

Christie accuses Senator Buono’s campaign of being fueled by anger. He also said she doesn’t know where she wants to take the state, but just wants to be critical of what he’s done as governor. “Campaigns are about tomorrow, not about yesterday. And Senator Buono has no vision for tomorrow except for programs that she can’t pay for, taxes that she’ll certainly increase, and folks that she’ll disappoint because in the end, if she ever became governor she’d be an abject failure at it,” he said.

Over the weekend, Christie had what some call a heated argument with a teacher. The governor said he was merely having a discussion with her over their opinions about the public school system in New Jersey. This teacher had accused Christie of being at fault for schools being what he calls failure factories due to the cuts in funding that he approved. However, Christie said that is not the case. “In fact there is more state funding for education today than any other time,” he said.

As Christie arrived in Hillside, there were signs on display in favor of Barbara Buono. Teachers in the area were protesting Christie’s campaign because they felt like they don’t have the support of the Governor. They said they want him to come to Hillside High School and see what they’re working with.

Senator Buono was also on the grind this week to gear voters up for Election Day. In New Brunswick, Buono visited a calling center to encourage people to get out and vote. When asked to comment on what Christie said about her, Buono said she finds it interesting that Christie would say that since he has vilified and called teachers and veterans rude and hurtful names.

“And yet people that call him out and ya know, you have to own your record Governor, and they call him to task. All of a sudden, he starts calling those people names, and all of a sudden, they’re angry, and they’re yelling when in fact nothing could be further from the truth,” she said.

Senator Buono had four stops yesterday on her own campaign trail in addition to an election rally in Union Township. She said these stops will make all the difference.
