Ex-police officer admits to stealing from daycare while on duty

NEWNAN, Ga. -

Authorities say a former Newnan police officer has admitted to stealing money from a daycare while he was on duty.

Zachery Anderson pled guilty on Monday to taking $245 from the All Stars Academy daycare while on duty last November.

Newnan Police Chief Douglas Meadows said he's at a loss to explain why the 40-year-old veteran officer stole the money.

Meadows said Anderson was with Newnan police for five years and before that he was with Cobb County police.

"It gives everybody a black eye in this profession, now just locally – everywhere," Meadows said.

Meadows said Anderson was fired after admitting to internal affairs he stole the money from the Coweta County daycare. Anderson's wife, who worked at the daycare at the time of the theft, told authorities about the burglary.

Anderson was sentenced to eight years' probation in a blind plea deal, where the judge -- not a jury -- sentenced him.

FOX 5 was unable to reach Anderson for comment.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
