3 tips to help calm your nerves when flying

The holiday season is often the only time of year some people choose to fly, and for some it may be the first time ever getting on a plane. Here are a few tips from Rick Seaney, FareCompare CEO, and travel expert Mark Murphy on how to ease those flying fears.

1) Educate yourself on how planes work and what to expect.
"If you're a first time flyer, understand the airport, the crew, the process.  And once you have that first flight most people tend to get over it, the second one's much easier," says Seaney.

2) Keep yourself distracted.
"Today you have access to so many gadgets, so many electronics and you can get on the plane and get lost in a good movie to take your mind off of what's going to be a pushback from the gate and a departure into the sky," says Murphy.

3) Fly during less crowded days, and during times of the day when bad weather is less likely.
Murphy says Tuesdays and Wednesdays are less crowded days: "It's going to be less congested at the airport. Take that first flight out, and there's going to be fewer weather issues on average early in the morning or late in the evening."

Andrew Cuomo continues to maintain a 2-to-1 advantage over his Republican challenger in New York's gubernatorial race. The Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday gives Cuomo a 56 to 28 percent lead over Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino. That's essentially unchanged from Quinnipiac's poll in May.
