Junior High's food drive donates over 20k pounds to United Food Bank

MESA, Ariz. -

Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away and many valley food banks are looking for donations, but there's one food bank that never worries -- a junior high school in Mesa that always collects a lot of food.

They're collecting food -- as much as they can.

"We average about 20,000 pounds of food a year that the kids bring in and the kids get to be involved," said Jeff Schafer.

Tanner Stangoe says it's a Desert Ridge Junior High School tradition.

"It helps people."

And they are good at it.  They have even won awards for collecting food for those in need for 13 years.

"The idea is to beat last year and last year, we had 2,500 pounds of food that was a semi-truck full," said Principal Jean Woods.

They are very competitive when it comes to the food drive.  They have peanut butter day, jelly day and cereal day to keep the competition fun.

On the first day of the food drive, they're doing well -- 26 barrels of food filled with canned goods from fruit to vegetables.

All of the food goes to United Food Bank.  Thanksgiving is one of their busiest and best times, thanks to this junior high.
