Phoenix veteran receives brand-new, mortgage-free home

PHOENIX -

People who own their home never forget the feeling of walking in it for the first time.

You can add one more family to that list and this family is special because the husband is a wounded veteran -- but that's just part of the story.

"This is amazing."

Amazing for Army Sgt. Richard Neider and his family.

On Monday morning, they got the keys to their home for the first time.  Meritage Homes and Operation Home Front teamed up to make it reality for the young family -- a home designed specifically for the soldier that makes it easier for him to get around, like wider doorways and countertops at just the right height.

"Having a countertop that's to a height that I can sit and enjoy a meal with my children," said Neider.

And now his kids have their own bathroom -- a bid deal for the family who's rented for years.

"I can't come up with the words to describe it.. it's just beautiful."

The family found out they had been nominated a few months ago.  Then in September, the call came -- they were chosen to get the home.

"It's very rare that you see tears come down my face, but the tears started rolling.. I was blown away by the fact that this happened for my family and I," said Neider.

And outside, dozens of neighbors and friends gathered for a BBQ to welcome them to their new home.
