Police fatally shoot suspect who charged officers

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

An officer involved shooting in north Phoenix leaves one man dead and police say they had no choice but to shot after the man came at them with a knife.

"I'm getting into bed.. I hear this real loud pop pop pop pop," said Justin Blum.

Neighbors heard the gunshots ring out around 11:30 p.m. Sunday -- counting nine of them.

"All of the sudden, my roommate bursts in the door and says get out here, somebody just shot at a cop," said Blum.

The shooting took place inside the doorway of unit 2 of a complex located near 5th Avenue and Tonopah.

"I heard just cops and it sounded like a high speed pursuit, then I heard the chopper pretty much right over our condo complex," said Jeff Van Horn.

Police were called to the area because of a domestic dispute -- an argument between the 51-year-old suspect and his 54-year-old girlfriend.  She escaped after he attacked her with a chef's knife and called 911.  When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect, identified as Alfred San Antonio, lunged at them with the weapon.

"This particular suspect still had this knife and began charging at both officers.  One of the officers discharged his weapon, striking this particular suspect.  That suspect was declared deceased on scene," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.

According to Phoenix Police, the girlfriend told officers the 54-year-old had been drinking, but the cause of the argument is unknown and neighbors say they had never seen the couple fight before.

"I heard a couple fighting over there, but it was a different couple.. I've never heard them fight," said Blum.

The incident appears isolated, but residents here remain on high alert. The girlfriend, in the meantime, suffered minor injuries and is expected to be okay.

The officer who shot the suspect, a 6-year veteran of the department, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
