The king of cook-offs is a kid

Posted: Updated:
PLANT CITY (FOX 13) -

We first met him four years ago when he was 13. Devin Davis had just won his first national award for his "Knock Your Socks Off Mango Delight."

Since then, Devin has gone from desserts to full-course meals. "It's just grown into a passion," Devin said as he scurried around the kitchen making dinner for his family.

Kids typically run around soccer fields. Devin prefers the kitchen.

"At least we get something out of it. The soccer moms have to go through McDonald's because they don't have time to cook," said Tina Davis, Devin's mom.

One day, the 17-year-old senior in high school from Plant City hopes to go pro.

"I wanna open my own restaurant and then hopefully I'd like to have my own cooking TV show," said Devin.

The hardware is on his side. His house is filled with trophies and first place ribbons. Devin's drilled the competition dozens of times in local, state, and national cook-offs.

The fresh faced kid can also tenderize and grill a steak like no other.

"He's taught me a few things, but I won't tell him that," his envious mom added.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
