Mother and son killed in house fire in Detroit, arson suspected

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A 49-year-old woman and her 16-year-old son are dead this morning after their home caught fire on Spencer street on the east side of Detroit.

The Detroit Fire Department responded to the call just before 5:00 a.m.

The woman died on the scene.  Her son was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he later died.

The Detroit Fire Department is ruling arson as the cause of the fire as they say an accelerant was used to light the house on fire.

Officials consider a family member a person of interest in the case.  The 18-year-old son and brother of the two victims is being held for questioning.

A neighbor saw at the house when the fire broke out.   When the fire department arrived, he was distraught.

Fox 2's Roop Raj is following this story in the field and this story will be updated as more information becomes available.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
