Fenimore Landfill Documents

Posted: Updated:
Roxbury, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

The horrific smell coming out of the Fenimore Landfill in Roxbury, New Jersey continues to take its toll on the residents of nearby neighborhoods. People in this area are extremely upset and they feel like they are being completely ignored since they have been enduring these practically unlivable conditions since November of 2012.

Documents surrounding this landfill have recently surfaced including the Material Acceptance Plan which came directly from the DEP and allowed Richard Bernardi to fill in the landfill with things like drywall. Unfortunately, when drywall gets wet the gypsum inside of it emits toxic fumes which would in the end result in the smell that residents are dealing with now.

Experts say that allowing drywall to rot in the landfill would easily predict that this odor would occur and that the DEP should have done something about it from the beginning before it got as bad as it is.

Ironically, nothing in the documentation indicates that there was a special plan to address the drywall and people are speculating that the dumping of drywall was originally authorized because it is extremely difficult and expensive to dispose of properly.

Residents feel like the governor is too focused on his campaign right now to help them and the DEP isn’t talking or addressing any of the concerns of the neighbors when they are clearly responsible for mismanaging what should and shouldn’t be put into the landfill.

Now, the state has come back in and tried to take control of the landfill but some experts are weary that this may not be the best thing since the state originally gave inappropriate dumping permissions in the first place. Can the state really help fix a problem that arguably they helped create?
