Children Of Domestic Violence

Posted: Updated:
Montclair, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. When it comes to domestic violence, often the most forgotten victims are the children.

Brian F. Martin is the founder of the Children of Domestic Violence Foundation based in Montclair, New Jersey. Martin grew up in Newark and was himself a child of domestic violence. He noted that there is often so much shame associated with domestic violence that it can be difficult to discuss.

As a result, his foundation created a short documentary called “The Children Next Door” to help both children and adults start a dialogue about this dangerous and traumatizing situation.

Martin noted that blaming the perpetrator is the wrong solution. He said that blame just leaves everyone powerless and then we focus more on the blame than we do on fixing the problem. “People don’t keep in mind that the man was once a boy and you judge before knowing what it is that he saw,” Martin said.

Martin also stated, “In this country alone there are 40 million adults who grew up in these homes, there are 5 million children tonight who will go to sleep in these homes. And when you look at those 5 million children, more than half are being raised by parents who were just those same children a generation ago.”

Not only has Martin’s foundation created this documentary, but they have also created the “Change a Life” program. This program helps adults gain the skills necessary to talk to children and teens about their experiences with domestic violence, provide support in coping, and inspire hope to help them choose a different path.

In New Jersey alone, it’s estimated that about 20,000 New Jersey children witness domestic violence annually and these children are 50% more likely to become an abuser if you witness abuse.

The mission of the Children of Domestic Violence Foundation is to help those who experience domestic violence as children reach their full potential and break the cycle of violence.
