NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The family, friends, and NYPD colleagues are mourning the loss of Detective Joseph Cavitolo, who died October 25, 2013, after fighting cancer. He was 51.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at St. Charles Catholic Church on Staten Island.

Appointed to the department in October 1990, Cavitolo began his career on patrol in Park Slope's 78 Precinct. He was promoted to detective specialist in August 2001, detective second grade in June 2006, and detective first grade in March 2010.

For more than 16 years, Cavitolo worked in the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information, was an integral part of the unit, and served with distinction, the NYPD said.

In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Cavitolo helped field thousands of inquiries from media outlets worldwide.

During his time in DCPI, the office was twice awarded a Unit Citation for outstanding performance: for the coordination of media coverage of the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and the president's historic visit to the First Precinct and Ground Zero, the NYPD said.

Cavitolo was a central part of media coordination of many major events, such as the New Year's Eve Times Square ball drop and Superstorm Sandy on Staten Island.

"He will be greatly missed at this year's NYC Marathon, where he was a mainstay at the start of the race for more than a decade," the NYPD said in a statement. "Those who knew Joe will always remember him for his contributions to the city through his work, and his constant kindness and friendship."
