2 AZ brothers plead guilty to tax, payroll charges

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Two Asian brothers who co-own a seafood grocery store in Phoenix have pleaded guilty to conspiracy counts related to federal tax and payroll charges.

Federal prosecutors say Dat Tan Lam and Precious Progress Lam were charged earlier this month with evading payroll and other taxes by paying workers in cash, filing false tax returns and concealing sales figures.

The brothers each pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Phoenix to one felony conspiracy count.

Prosecutors say the Lams could face up to five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines when they're sentenced on March 4.

The brothers operate Lam's Seafood Market, which opened in 2003.

Internal Revenue Service investigators say the Lams' federal tax and payroll problems were for the years 2003, 2004 and 2005.
