Scorpions scare metro Atlanta residents

Posted: Updated:
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Some metro Atlanta residents said they have had close encounters with scorpions in recent days.

With the cooler weather coming in, some creatures are seeking shelter and warmth indoors.

Gwinnett County resident Christi Tininnis said she came across a scorpion in her house on Tuesday. At first she thought it was a joke played by someone who knew her fear of bugs.

"Then as I got a little closer, it started to move, and I'm like, 'Oh my God it's alive and it's real and I think it's a scorpion,'" Tininnis said.

She took some pictures before a friend helped her scoop the scorpion into a container and take it safely away from the house.

Andrew Hudson is sure a scorpion stung his ankle two weeks ago outside his home in Smyrna.

"Suddenly I felt an electric shock in my ankle; it felt like something stung me or bit me," Hudson said.

University of Georgia medical entomologist Nancy Hinkle said that scorpions are common in Georgia. The species found in this part of the state is called the "Southern Devil." This scorpion sting, she said, is generally no worse than a wasp sting, but it still packs a punch.
