The Breeders Cup Comes To Santa Anita

Posted: Updated:

The richest two day sporting event in North America is coming to Santa Anita Park. The Breeders Cup $27 million Championships open on Friday.

There are a total of fourteen races with horses coming from all over the world. We're talking about multi-million dollar horses. The competition is fierce!! There are 150 competitors.

"Game on Dude" is the local favorite. He's the horse expected to win the classic.  Game on Dude has already won $5.6 million dollars in his life time.

Little facts:

  • Geldings (castrated horses) compete with stallions.
  • The fillies (girl horses) compete with the boys and they do really well.
  • "Zeñada" was the local favorite gal. She won the Breeders Cup Classic in 09.
  • The Classic is worth $5 million.
  • Jockeys must weigh no more than 115 pounds.

Behind the scenes, 90 percent of racing employees are Latinos from all over the world. I had a great time interviewing jockeys, trainers and the VP of Racing and Gaming.

Check out the interviews. Plus, I had a chance to ride a beautiful horse.

Here's a link for more information on Breeders Cup and tickets.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
