School Biology Assignment Upsets Parents

Posted: Updated:

A homework assignment creates controversy at a Colorado high school. The lesson is on fermentation, and it has gotten the attention of a lot of parents.

It's a standard part of the curriculum for biology students to learn about fermentation, but at one high school, students are learning about it in an hands-on way, by brewing up their own beer.

The assignment asks students to become familiar with all steps of the beer making process. Students can even get extra credit if they go for a tour at the Coors brewing factory. However, the lesson and the extra credit option are upsetting some parents. Some parents say that the assignment sends the wrong message. They say that they don't see any reason to teach a 15-year-old the steps to creating alcohol.

"I think that, until it's reviewed it should be stopped immediately, and then, in the future, decide what to do with it," opined a parent.

"Basically a how-to guide, in my opinion, on how to make your own alcohol," opined another.

However, some parents think that the assignment is nothing more than a fun science project. In fact, they say that breaking alcohol down to a scientific process actually takes the mystique out of drinking. While the district is investigating the lesson, students, or students whose parents object to the assignment, can choose to do an alternate, non-alcoholic assignment.
