Kara DioGuardi: You Never Know What Turns Life Will Take

Posted: Updated:

Kara Dioguardi is taking part in a 5K run a week from Sunday and it's for a cause that's very personal for her and everyone else taking part in the Run for Her 5K Run and Friendship Walk to Support Ovarian Cancer Research. She explained why to Steve and Lisa.

"I did it three years prior (to this past Sunday). My best friend was involved with the organization and I got to do it for a friend of hers. And then a little over a year I found out I had a Bracket gene..it's a genetic propensity, for breast cancer it's about 80 percent for ovarian its about 40 percent. So I was able to turn to this incredible organization and through Cedars Sinai get the help I needed to make decisions."

Kara's mother died of ovarian cancer. Run for Her supports the Women's Cancer Program at Cedars-Sinai's Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. Kara says it was exactly what she needed at the right time.

"I was just really lucky that I knew them and so this is what's so great about this organization because they're raising awareness, they're raising funds, for research for ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is very difficult to detect. There's no great screening process for it..."
