Hurricane Sandy Made Landfall In Brigantine

Posted: Updated:

One year after Hurricane Sandy tore the beaches apart; there is still a lot of work left to be done.

From the south to the north, the impacts of the deadly storm are still being felt all while there are ongoing efforts to rebuild lost and battered communities.

Tonight hundreds of people along the shore will mark the anniversary by lightning candles and flashing lights to remember the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The storm was historic. 182 people died and it caused $65 billion in damages.

That doesn't even count the psychological toll it took on the residents who had to endure days without power or water.

Sandy officially made landfall the evening of October 29th, 2013 in Brigantine, Atlantic County just north of Atlantic City. However, the storm's wrath could be felt up and down the entire New Jersey Coastline, and into New York City.

As we look back over the last year, and look toward the future. We've got team coverage of the anniversary in Beach Haven, Little Egg Harbor Township and Staten Island, New York.

But we will begin with Fox 29's Bruce Gordon. He went to Brigantine, Atlantic City where the storm made land fall.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
