Whooping cough cases on the rise in Pima County

Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Sixty-nine cases of whooping cough have been reported in Pima County so far this year, including three at a high school east of Tucson in recent weeks.

The Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/16H8bHR ) says the county had 46 whooping cough cases in all of last year.

The latest cases bring the total of reported student whooping cough infections in the Vail Unified School District to seven.

Four cases were reported at the district's Sycamore and Senita Valley elementary schools as well as Civano Community School between early September and the beginning of October.

County health officials say any students at Vail's Empire High who haven't been vaccinated against whooping cough shouldn't be allowed to attend classes or school-related activities for three weeks or longer, depending on whether future cases are identified.
