Honda recalling 21,000 all-terrain vehicles

WASHINGTON -- Honda is recalling about 21,000 all-terrain vehicles due to concern that the steering shaft can break off suddenly and cause a crash.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Tuesday. It said consumers should stop using the vehicles and call a Honda dealer for free repairs.

The safety commission says drivers can lose steering control and crash if the shaft breaks off, which poses a risk of injury or death.

A safety commission spokesman said there have been 18 reports of the shaft breaking off resulting in two crashes but no injuries or deaths. A Honda spokesman said in one case the steering shaft broke after the crash.

The recall covers eight 2012 and 2013 FourTrax models made in the U.S. by American Honda Motor Co. and sold from May 2011 through September 2013. They list for between $6,900 and $7,900.

Honda ATVs were also the subject of five recalls since 2007 involving about 120,000 vehicles. According to information on the safety commission's website, only one injury was reported -- a driver who suffered a sprained wrist.

The agency says that riding ATVs can be risky, however. On its website, it says there were at least 590 ATV-related deaths in 2010, the last year listed, and that was the lowest total since 2002.
