Bay area's best golf courses: Wentworth Golf Club

Posted: Updated:

A continuing series on, featuring some of the Tampa Bay area's best golf courses.

Wentworth Golf Club

Sister to the nearby Crescent Oaks, Wentworth Golf Club is perhaps the finest course open to the public in Tarpon Springs. It was designed by Steve Smyers, who also redesigned the famous Isleworth Country Club (Google "Tiger Woods Iselworth").

Its castle-style clubhouse and natural landscape give Wentworth an authentic European feel. Play a few rounds and you're likely to catch a wild boar or deer on the grounds, patrons say.

At 6,459 yards from the back tees, it is demanding, but a fair challenge for amateur golfers.

The par-5 8th is certainly one of the best par-5's in this area – a 510-yard dogleg right that's featured by a large tree atop a bunker. The setup creates for a daunting approach.

The scenic par-3 12th is played entirely over water, and the intimidating par-4 11th highlights Smyers' creativity with fairway bunkers.
