NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Flags of the United States and New York were lowered to half-staff on state government buildings, Tuesday, October, 29, 2013, in honor of the victims of Superstorm Sandy.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued the order Monday in advance of Tuesday's first anniversary of when the powerful hybrid storm slammed the tristate area.

"Superstorm Sandy was one of the worst natural disasters to hit our State in decades, causing widespread damage and ultimately taking the lives of 61 people in New York," Cuomo said in a statement. "As we approach the one-year anniversary of this terrible storm, our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who perished, as well as the countless others whose lives were impacted in the days that followed."

Cuomo also called for New Yorkers to observe a moment of silence at 8 p.m. on Tuesday to mark the approximate time when the storm surge hit New York City.

Sandy destroyed or damaged more than 300,000 housing units, knocked out power to more than 2 million people, and brought the transportation system to a half for more than a day Cuomo's office said.

Thousands of New Yorkers continue to cope with the impacts of the storm.

You've got a few more weeks to enjoy SummerStage, New York's annual performing arts showcase that's 28 years running. But it's not just music: there is dance, comedy, theater, you name it. There are several shows weekly at 14 different parks throughout the five boroughs. A recent show at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park paid tribute to Pete Seeger. Most of the shows are free and are funded by tickets purchased for the some of the bigger acts.
