Theme Park Under Fire By Miners

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A Virginia theme park is coming under fire by American mine workers. The United Mine Workers of America are mad because they say that one of the Halloween attractions at King's Dominion theme park is insensitive.

The ride is called the "Miner's Revenge" maze. It describes a bunch of miners that were trapped underground following a cave-in disaster. The ride is their chance to get revenge on those who left them to die.

The United Mine Workers of America argues that it trivializes the memories of the thousands of miners who have died in America's mines.

The thrill hits too close to home for some. The scenario depicted reminds some of the 2010 disaster at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch mine in southern West Virginia. 29 miners lost their lives in the blast.

King's Dominion said in a statement that the attraction was not designed, nor intended, to depict a specific situation.

18 miners have died this year in the United States. This is another piece of data that the miners say gets written off as the cost of doing business.
