Firefighters injured, residents displaced in Gurnee fire

GURNEE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Three firefighters were injured and an undetermined number of residents were displaced in a condominium fire in north suburban Gurnee Sunday afternoon.

The two-alarm fire started about 1:36 p.m. in a six-unit condominium building in the 17400 block of West Walnut Lane, Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob Heraver said.

The fire started near the middle of the building in a utility room, but all six units were damaged and five were uninhabitable as of Sunday afternoon, Heraver said.

He said crews had the fire under control within an hour, and that the last emergency personnel left at 5:36 p.m.

Twenty fire departments were involved in the incident, including 16 at the scene of the blaze and four others helping to cover other Gurnee emergencies while local crews were busy with the fire, Heraver said.

Two Gurnee firefighters were taken from the fire to Condell Health Network in Libertyville and a Newport firefighter was taken to Vista Health - Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan, all in good condition, Heraver said.

A civilian was treated for a "medical issue" at the scene of the fire but declined transport to a hospital, Heraver said. There were no other injuries.

Residents of five out of the six units were displaced in the fire, although an exact number was unavailable Sunday afternoon, Heraver said. He said the American Red Cross was assisting them in finding shelter.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
