Crash Kills Teen, Hurts Others In NE Philly

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The mangled wreckage from a deadly car crash in Northeast Philadelphia can only begin to give you an idea of the grief being felt tonight in one community.

Things went out of control, police say, when the driver of that truck suffered some kind of a medical emergency, and when it came to rest the driver's step-son was dead.

The driver and several passengers in a crash on Red Lion Road are at Aria-Torresdale Hospital recovering from their injuries. Meanwhile many people are thinking about a 17-year-old also in that vehicle that died while trying to save the lives of others.

The devastating scene of mangled metal was at Red Lion Road and Norcom Road in the Northeast.

It's where a boy identified by neighbors as 17-year-old Chris Alvelo died thinking about his step father and friends.

Chris was one of several teens heading back from an Eagle Scouts community service project in Pennypack Park when investigators say his stepfather suffered a medical emergency in the driver's seat. Their truck left the roadway.

Police say Chris took the wheel trying to save lives, but it cost him his own.

The truck slammed into the back of this parked van which then rammed into the North Philadelphia Jet Center.

Chris Alvelo died on scene.

A close-knit community now torn apart thinking about a young life lost...that had so much promise.

Family members and friends said off camera the driver was unconscious when he was taken to the hospital. He also suffered a neck injury. One other passenger was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children for treatment.
