Magnitude 7.3 quake hits off of Japan

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - A tsunami warning was issued in Japan after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit in the waters off of Japan in the early morning hours of Saturday, according to the USGS.

No Pacific wide tsunami warning was expected to be posted, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage but the quake was felt as far away as Japan.

According to the USGS the quake was at a depth of 6.2 miles in the Pacific Ocean and located 202 miles ESE of Ishinomaki and 295 miles ENE of Tokyo.  The quake hit at 2:10 a.m. Tokyo time.

All but two of Japan's 50 reactors have been offline since the March 2011 magnitude-9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami triggered multiple meltdowns and massive radiation leaks at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, about 250 kilometers (160 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

About 19,000 people were killed.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
