Daley Academy 7th graders use art to cope with violence

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Students at a school across from the Back of the Yards park where 13 people were shot in September are using art to cope with the violence.

A group of Richard J. Daley Elementary Academy students are no strangers to violence in their neighborhood. But after the Cornell Square Park shooting, they want to send a clear message to the larger community about the impact incidents like these have on them.

The 7th graders showed off the results of an eight-week program to promote awareness and gun violence prevention. They created stunning images of young people lying on the ground, in graves and as angels.

The Cornell Park shootings heavily influenced their work. Recess was canceled after the incident. It has been reinstated, but they now have drills to learn how to react in case of gunfire.

The kids say they are glad the public is getting to see what's on their minds.

"I want people to relate to what I'm feeling, to what I think about at night and my painting," one student said. "I want people to feel safe at night, and people to understand to what other people are going through. The whole community understands what we're going through, but I want people to see."
