ATLANTA -

There are new questions into how Kendrick Johnson died. The 17-year-old was found dead in rolled up gym mat at Lowndes High School back in January.

Investigators have ruled his death an accident, but his family has questioned that from the beginning. Lawyers for the family filed two lawsuits this week in hopes of finding answers.

The family is asking for a coroner's inquest, where a jury would hear the evidence and decide if it was accidental or a murder.

The family is also suing the sheriff's department, saying they withheld evidence in the case, including blood samples and security video of the gym where Johnson's body was found.

Kendrick Johnson's father, Kenneth, said he believes there is a cover-up in the case.

"They know what's going on. They got the surveillance camera. They know what's going on," Johnson said of the sheriff's department and the school.

The Johnson family believes that there are people out there who know what happened to their son.

"Whoever was in that gym with him, they know exactly what happened to Kendrick," said Jacquelyn Johnson, Kendrick's mother.

Since their son's death, the Johnson family has paid for a second autopsy and brought in private investigators. All of those investigators have concluded that Kendrick Johnson was likely murdered.

Attorneys for the Johnson family hope to know by the end of this month whether or not these lawsuits will carry any weight and will continue.

Last weekend, the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Council announced they will be offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction in the death of teen.
