US: Rakes’ wife’s claim to Bulger’s money 'inappropriate'

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – A claim by the widow of a one-time potential witness in the James "Whitey" Bulger case to Bulger's money is inappropriate, according to the U.S. Government.

Stephen Rakes' widow, Julie Rakes Dammers, claims Bulger extorted money from her family years before he was found guilty. She said her family was entitled to some of the $800,000 FBI investigators recovered from Bulger's Santa Monica apartment in 2011. Dammers filed her claim earlier this month.

The government says Dammers is inappropriately asking the court to make a new law that would allow "creditors" of a defendant to intervene in a criminal case and alter a judgment.

They also argue that Dammers is asking the court to ignore forfeiture procedures and "extinguish – without due process – the rights of any other parties." They have asked the court to throw Dammers' claim out.

William Camuti is facing attempted murder charges in Rakes' poisoning death which occurred over the summer.

Prosecutors say he owed Rakes money.

Everyone hates long lines at security checkpoints and the TSA knows it. Now the TSA is sponsoring a contest to encourage anyone with new ideas about how to make the airport security lines go faster. Often for air travelers, the security checkpoint experience is the worst part of their trip. That's why the TSA turned to the crowdsourcing site Innocentive asking for ideas pledging a total of $15,000 in prize money, with at least one $5,000 award.
