Coweta County students tested for tuberculosis

Posted: Updated:
COWETA COUNTY, Ga. -

A middle school student from Coweta County is undergoing treatment for tuberculosis.  Health officials said they won't know for several weeks if the child has the lung disease.

More than 200 students, faculty and staff at Smokey Road Middle were screened for TB last week. All of them are connected with the 8th grade.  Some students at Newnan High School and Western Elementary who ride the same bus with the middle school student were also tested.

About 27 people from Smokey Road Middle School have tested positive for exposure to TB along with one other person from the student's bus.  They will now have to get chest x-rays and possibly have to take preventative medication.

"That means at some time in their lifetime, they have been exposed to tuberculosis. That does not mean they were necessarily exposed to it by this particular student," said Hayla Folder of the Department of Public Health.

Health officials say at any given time , 10 percent of the population will test positive for TB exposure.

A dance party for kids and tweens looks like a rave or perhaps a wild night at the club. But actually, many of the people at this party probably just learned how to tie their shoes. Twin brothers Tyler and Tristin recently had a FUZIPOP party in Manhattan to celebrate their 10th birthday. Never heard of a FUZIPOP party?

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and the federal prosecutor investigating political payback allegations involving the Republican's administration are both set to speak at a prisoner re-entry conference on Thursday.
Former NBA player Jayson Williams says trying to re-enter society after serving time for shooting a limousine driver was more difficult than being in prison.
