Officer’s Gun Fired at School, Police Safety Procedures Not Followed

Posted: Updated:

Thursday evening Chino Police released a list of protocols officers are supposed to follow when carrying a patrol rifle. The protocols include keeping the chamber empty, the rifle bolt forward with hammer down, rifle safety off, having a loaded magazine with no more than 27 round, the dust cover closed, and rifle stored in locked patrol vehicle's rifle rack or trunk.

In a written statement Chino Police Chief Miles Pruitt said, "The preliminary investigation has shown that the established safeguards and procedures were not followed.  It is unfortunate that this event occurred and I will make every effort to ensure it does not happen again."

Wednesday was supposed to be a safety demonstration during red ribbon week.  Instead, a police officer's AR15 was fired by on the campus of Newman Elementary.

Shrapnel hurt 3 students, including Gladys Vasquez's son, "I don't know, I'm just glad my son's ok, I'm glad he's alive.  Because he could've died," said Gladys.

According to the Chino Police Department the students only had minor injuries and all 3 were released from the hospital.

"Pieces of metal went in his little eye, just little pieces," said Vasquez.

Gladys' son, who is in the 3rd grade, described to his mom how the gun was shot.  "The gun was loaded one of the guns was loaded that was on the motorcycle. And one of the kids shot the gun, pulled the trigger to the gun and it went off," Gladys told FOX 11.

Thursday police only gave a written statement.  It says in part that the officer's rifle was never removed from the locked mounting device on the motorcycle.

An employee at Bullet Barn Guns showed FOX 11 an AR15 and the safety devices those guns have.  Police also said there was a metal plate that stopped the bullet, the shrapnel from that plate is what hurt the kids.

Gladys wants answers about why and how this happened, "I just don't understand why there was a loaded gun at the school."
