Twitter Threats Prompt Arrest Of Lawndale High School Student

Posted: Updated:
Lawndale, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A 17-year-old female student was arrested today for allegedly making threats via Twitter to shoot students at Lawndale High School, authorities said.

The girl was arrested at her home about 6:30 a.m. on suspicion of felony criminal threats, and was booked at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, the sheriff's department reported. Her name was not released.

Extra sheriff's deputies were deployed today to the campus at 14901 Inglewood Ave. "to reassure everyone'' that the school is safe, the sheriff's department reported.

Deputies received call early this morning "from a concerned person stating someone made threats via Twitter to shoot students at school,'' sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker said.

Investigators this afternoon were in the process of serving a search warrant at the teen's Lawndale home to search for possible weapons, authorities said.

"Threats such as these are taken very seriously,'' Parker said. "Criminal threats bring fear to students, faculty, parents, and the community.''

From Sandra Endo:

All was safe and sound at Lawndale High School today after the LA Sherriff's Department arrested a 17-year-old senior at 6:30 AM this morning.

Law enforcement officials were anonymously alerted to this tweet, posted by the student,

"#thoughts during school should I shoot up the school? what if I accidently shoot someone I like? Pfftt I hate everyone what am I talking about."

Her name is not being released since she's a juvenile but she's facing a felony charge for making a criminal threat.

LA Sherriff Captain Mike Parker says, "The threat was specific enough and direct enough we were able to take immediate action and make the arrest. "

Authorities got a search warrant for the teen's house but did not find any weapons.

Students on campus who know her say she was known to speak her mind.

Junior David Aguirre, "Sarcasm can't be expressed the right way because on Twitter or Facebook people take it literally.

So you don't think she was making threats?

No no not at all."

Captain Parker says, sarcasm or not, "I'm here to say, threatening to shoot children is not a joke. we don't think it's funny, the criminal justice system doesn't think it's funny and the parents of all the kids who are being threatened don't think it's funny."

With so many fatal school shootings nationwide, other students agree that kind of social media post shouldn't be taken lightly.

Junior Miriam Garcia says, "It's really scary because what if all of us were coming to school. I don't want a repeat of that Sandy Hook thing."

Authorities say more than five other teens have posted similar threats on line in protest of the arrest made today. Law enforcement officials are investigating each one of them and say those teens may also face criminal charges.
