Did Christie Have Democrat Fired?

Posted: Updated:
Trenton, New Jersey (My9NJ) -

In 2010, long-time government employee Hannah Shostack claimed she was fired because Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, had just come into power. She said she was targeted because she wasn’t a member of the Republican Party.

A year later, she sued the Port Authority, stating that her supervisor told her the order to fire her came straight from Governor Christie’s office. Her adviser also said there was nothing she could do to save her job.

She settled her suit against the state in June 2012. John Paff, Chairman of the New Jersey Libertarian Open Government Advocacy Project (OPRA) says that the amount of money or other terms Shostack was given by the Port Authority to settle the suit is important public info. It could tell the public whether they just paid to settle the case or if there was real reason behind what Shostack claimed. If it was settled for hundreds of thousands of dollars that indicates it could have been a real threat against the Port Authority and Governor Christie’s reputation.

After requesting the settlement information, Paff received a letter from the Port Authority, denying him the information. “Daniel Duffy, the PA’s records custodian, said releasing the settlement agreement would undermine a police investigations and would endanger public safety. That is the reason that he relied upon, which is complete nonsense. The investigation is over, the lawsuits been filed, the money’s been paid.” He said.

When Paff tried to challenge the denial in the New Jersey Superior Court, he says he was told the New Jersey Superior Court did not have jurisdiction because the Port Authority is a bi-state agency of New York and New Jersey.

Weeks after he received the letter, two superior court judges, one of which is Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno’s husband, Michael Guadagno, decided in a separate case that “OPRA does not apply to the Port Authority”.

Paff isn’t just letting this go though. He will be filing the same lawsuit in the appellate division since the Port Authority isn’t accountable to the state of New Jersey, New York, or the federal courts. The appellate division would be making the decision on allowing access to the records. “The people have the right to judge if Christie did have this woman fired. So the only way to do that is to find out the amount of this settlement agreement.” Paff said.

Shostack is now working as Senior Director of Capital Programs at the Governor’s office. Christie’s office wouldn’t comment on this, saying the Port Authority should be contacted for comment since the lawsuit is with them. The Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman never returned any requests for comment.

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.

Making New York City more energy efficient

Making New York City more energy efficient

    Friday, July 25 2014 8:45 PM EDT2014-07-26 00:45:49 GMT
More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
