DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

After 586 carjackings in the city of Detroit so far this year, Detroit Police Department is working to get that number on the decline. Police are focusing on one area in particular: 'Carjack City,' or Seven Mile Road.

"Seven Mile - we call it 'Carjack City' because we have a large number of carjackings on Seven Mile," Investigator Brian Fountain of Detroit Police tells Fox 2's Alexis Wiley.

So why Seven Mile?

The people Fox 2 spoke with say that's where crews like to hang out around the gas stations and strip malls. But the biggest problem may be the high number of street lights that don't work.

"I keep going through the lights," Lonell Mitchell tells us, "because it's too dark and there's nobody else around. Why would I stop here at this dark corner? I'm going to keep going."

"You folks want carjacking in the city of Detroit to stop - and it's going to stop," DPD Chief James Craig said. The department has made carjackings one of its top priorities. The department is in the midst of a major crackdown and has already caught several crews this year.

Now police are reaching out to Detroiters to help them protect themselves and their neighborhoods.

The Detroit Lighting Authority will be working on the lighting in the area of Seven Mile and Gratiot Avenue. That work could begin as soon as November.

Out of over 500 hopefuls only a handful will join the Brooklyn Nets Kids Dance Team. The Nets held auditions this week at LIU Brooklyn. Adorable Bronx native Arielle was turned away last year but this time around she's made it through to the final round of the auditions. But even those who were on the team last year still have to try out.
