FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

A local family is demanding answers after their loved one died while locked up in the Fulton County Jail.

Relatives say Douglas Brown was an Army veteran and father. He's described by his family as a lively guy who loved people and always lit up a room.

Brown was a security guard at Skate Town in College Park and a bouncer at the U-Bar on Camp Creek Parkway.

The 41-year-old man ran into trouble when he was jailed earlier this month on a child abandonment charge regarding his 16-year-old son. His family pointed out that Brown also has a 14-year-old daughter who was living with him.

"He had talked to me before about his ex-wife pressing charges against him, something about child support, and I was like, 'How can she do that if she's supporting one and you're supporting your daughter,'" said Sandra Brown, Douglas' mother.

The Browns said their son was thrown into Fulton County Jail on Oct. 8. Brown's father, Robert, said he was in court with his son when they took him into custody. He said that since Douglas was a diabetic, his medications became an immediate concern.

"I said, ‘You took him in and he's diabetic. He don't have nothing with him...no insulin,'" Robert Brown said.  "'We'll take care of it,' is what they said."

The family said that 12 days later, they received the shock of their lives when the medical examiner called to say Douglas had passed away.

"I said, ‘What do you mean he passed?' 'I can't tell you,'" Robert Brown said.

Fulton officials released a statement saying, in part, "Mr. Brown made two trips to Grady Memorial Hospital during his incarceration and he developed other complications. The medical examiner's office tells us the cause of death is still pending."

The family wants answers.

"They said he went to Grady. He was at Grady for two days. I said, 'How come nobody notified us.' ‘We don't have to notify you,'" said Brown.

The Brown family said that after seeing Douglas' body at the funeral room, they saw two visible scars to the man's face.
