Film Czar Tom Sherak Discusses Runaway Production

Posted: Updated:

LA's new Film Czar Tom Sherak stopped in Tuesday morning to talk about his new mission: keeping Hollywood productions in Los Angeles. Since LA is an industry town, it makes sense for production to stay in the state. But more and more projects are headed elsewhere. Tom says he's not fighting for celebrities who make millions, he's fighting for everybody else.

"The below the line people. Makeup woman. the driver. The grip. The construction guys. 50 percent of people working in LA today are entertainment related jobs. We need to keep them working."

Tom also pointed out it's not just folks working on projects that benefit from keeping production local.

"We know that once a production is here what it does to the vendors in our town, the bakeries and the shops, people shopping and spending money."

Tom says Mayor Garcetti's passion convinced him to take the job.

"He wears what he wants to do on his sleeve and he speaks that way. He said to me we need to do this. We live in this city...as a community and we're all a community, the city has to be healthy."

So what's the plan?

"I'm gonna do what I do. I'm gonna put together a group of really smart people who want to bring this industry back here. I'm gonna sit down with them and we're gonna come up with a plan to give to the Mayor. The Mayor and I are going to go to Sacramento. And we're hopefully going to make them an offer they can't refuse."
