Detroit buses resume service after driver protest

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (WJBK) -- Detroit buses are rolling again after a drivers' protest over safety issues halted operations for a day.

Gary Brown, the city's chief compliance officer, says that Detroit Department of Transportation service was running Tuesday.

About 150 drivers rallied Monday outside Detroit City Hall to protest what they see as a lack of protections for drivers, who have seen several recent violent on-the-job attacks. The city halted service earlier Monday after drivers called in sick.

The rally focused on four attacks in roughly the past week that sent drivers to hospitals.

On Monday, police Chief James Craig said the department would step up efforts on buses to deter crime. He says some uniformed officers will ride buses, which later this year are expected to get security cameras.
